“For MGS4, or any other Metal Gear game, I always tend to draw on something that seems to be a 'threat' to society in the near future - maybe one or two years from the present time.”
In 2009 Kojima said he had not tried to make the Metal Gear Solid games increasingly fantastical over time, but instead always starts from something that appears to be a threat to society in the near future, maybe one or two years ahead; he cited issues like Blackwater in Iraq as an example he was able to address in Metal Gear Solid 4.
“So things like Blackwater in Iraq, I was able to look at these issues with MGS4, and so I don't really consider it a fantasy-like approach.”
