“They're going to make it into a movie starring Ryan Gosling, but I don't think it's possible.”
Kojima recommended Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir: he wrote the commentary for one of its first Japanese covers, chosen because the previous cover text contained a spoiler and his did not, and the book is already on its third cover after winning the Seiun Award, confirming his theory of the phases. He described the opening without spoiling — the protagonist wakes amnesic aboard a ship while the Earth enters a glaciation, and the main story does not take place where it first appears — and expressed skepticism about the announced film starring Ryan Gosling, saying he does not think it is possible because there is an element in the book that readers imagine in their heads and he does not know how they will make that come to life on screen. He nevertheless urged everyone to read it, and said he would buy it without hesitation for that space-themed cover.
“There's a science fiction work called Project Hail Mary. […] I did the comments for the first book cover for this one. […] It's on its third cover now since it won the Seiyun Award. […] The first one had a spoiler, and that's why mine was used. […] In the book, since it's written in words, the reader just has to picture it in their heads. But to make it come to life on screen, I don't know how they're going to do that.”
