“It's a mystery so I don't want to give too much away but when I read this I treated it as a work of literature.”
Kojima said he thinks We Begin at the End by Chris Whitaker will become many people’s number one book. He described it as set in the American West, centred on a policeman and a girl called Duchess who calls herself an outlaw; Duchess is the daughter of an alcoholic mother, cares for a younger brother, gets pulled into complications that twist everything, and projects a positivity that makes readers want to cheer for her. Kojima said he couldn’t put the book down, praised its ending, and added that he read it as a work of literature — the very American trait of high literature that also contains elements of mystery — and that if you buy it you will hold on to it forever.
“I think it'll become a lot of people's number one book. […] This girl is amazing. […] She calls herself an outlaw. […] You want to just keep cheering for her. You can't put the book down. […] It's high literature but also has elements of mystery. […] I think if you buy it, you'll hold on to it forever.”
