“There was a period of time when that was popular too, aliens as the good guys.”
Kojima mapped out the on‑screen alien: first the bad and scary aliens — abductions and evil plans, from Ultraseven to the Alien saga; then a period of good aliens, with Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T., and he joked about conspiracies that Spielberg worked for the U.S. government; after that the UFO became a little outdated and the focus moved to mindless space creatures that only live to breed and wreak havoc, starting with Alien.
“in that era, aliens were bad and scary, abducting people and making evil plans. […] in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the aliens were the good guys in ET2. […] And then, UFOs became a little outdated and we focused more on creatures from outer space. Startinging with the Alien franchise, they didn't really have any intelligence, just living to breed.”
