“I went to see Blade Runner because I had already read and was a fan of Philip K. Dick's original work, and I was a fan of Ridley Scott from Alien, and then I found out that Vangelis was doing the music.”
Kojima said he went to see Blade Runner because he had already read and was a fan of Philip K. Dick’s original novel, he was a fan of Ridley Scott from Alien, and he then discovered that Vangelis was doing the music. The film was in theaters for only two or three weeks and nobody around him went to see it in theaters; contemporary reviews were poor and the film was later rescued by the VHS era, much like how Mr. Oshii’s OVAs became a hit. He described the odyssey of the soundtrack: it was not released for around twelve years, during which time apocryphal orchestral versions and many bootlegs circulated and fans had to make do, until it finally appeared (he recommends the 3 CD set), with the Love Theme, which he calls the most beautiful song, as its emblem.
“So I went to go see it and it was only in theaters for like two or three weeks. Nobody else around me went to see it in theaters. […] It's similar to how Mr. Oshii's OVA became a hit. […] It wasn't released for around 12 years. […] There were also a lot of bootleg versions available.”
