“Subscribe? But I like buying CDs.”
Kojima recounted his surrender to the CD: at first he mocked them — he saw them in shop windows and the sound quality did not seem great — and he kept buying vinyl until his favorite artists began releasing only on CD. He compared the shift to VHS versus Betamax and said he reluctantly started buying CDs. As of 2022 he still bought about 70 CDs a year, almost all box sets, anniversary editions and remasters (older CDs sounded awful), and he has imported them into his computer since the iPod era. He said he values Japanese editions for translated notes and extra tracks that his British friends covet. When the co-host asked him to subscribe to Spotify, he replied that subscribing was unnecessary because he likes buying CDs.
“The sound quality wasn't great either, so I was kind of making fun of them at first. […] It was like when VHS was pitted against Betamax. […] So I reluctantly started buying CDs. […] I buy about 70 a year, maybe? All CDs. Almost everything is a box set or some sort of anniversary release. […] Subscribe? But I like buying CDs.”
