“At that time, if you did electronic music, people assumed you were a weirdo.”
Kojima recalled that there was a time when electronic music was stigmatized: in the film Lipstick the attacker was an electronic musician, and in Seicho Matsumoto’s novel Inspector Imanishi Investigates the villain was also an electronic musician; he said that back then people assumed electronic musicians were weird. He said he grew up in the synthesizer generation (Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, then YMO) and that that analog electronic music has been his favorite since childhood.
“In the movie Lipstick, the guy who attacked that girl, that guy was an electronic musician. And in Seicho Matsumoto's novel, Inspector Imanishi Investigates, the bad guy in that was also an electronic musician. At that time, if you did electronic music, people assumed you were a weirdo.”
