“Without that encounter I probably wouldn't have pursued a proper sequel, and there might never have been a Metal Gear Solid.”
The Famicom sequel Snake's Revenge was made without Kojima, who was in Konami’s MSX division and heard about it through rumours. One day he met on a train someone from the Famicom department who had worked for him and told him that that was not a true sequel and that the true sequel should be made by him. Back at home he began to think about how it would be. Kojima maintains that without that encounter he probably would not have pursued a proper sequel, and there might never have been a Metal Gear Solid.
