I don't read the ones that end up at the bottom of the stack, so…

Anecdote 2022-10
“I don't read the ones that end up at the bottom of the stack, so every week I turn them over and change the order.”
What it documents

Kojima described his reading funnel: in the bookstore a book passes the first sieve — it grabs him by title, illustration or world; he looks at the back cover, the reviews (skipping those that warn of spoilers), the summary; he deliberates and goes to the checkout. But once home the second stage begins: the book goes on the shelf to compete with all the others. He has the one he is reading and the next in line, but a new book appears and he thinks this is next… no, wait, this — again and again; the ones that end up at the bottom of the stack are never read, so every week he turns them over and changes the order. In the end what he feels like reading in the moment decides, because the day only has 24 hours.

“Then I put it on the shelf in my room and from there, it competes with all the other books I have. […] And this repeats over and over again. […] It's always just like what I feel like reading in that moment. We only have 24 hours in a day.”
