“Mr. Oshii remixed it very precisely and I do that with my games too. It's that sort of thing that makes Mr. Oshii really special. He just builds up all the tiny details.”
Kojima said that when they had just met, Oshii invited him to watch him work on a sound remix for Patlabor 1 and 2; that day Oshii was alone in a huge studio, polishing the sound of the rain. Kojima explained the lesson with his own craft: rain can hardly be drawn or processed in real time in film, anime, or games — Kurosawa even made the rain black so it would show — so it is constructed with sound, underlining each raindrop, and a remix of the rain on a rooftop changes the entire atmosphere of the scene. He said Oshii remixed it very precisely, that he does the same in his games, and that building up all those tiny details is what makes Oshii special.
“When I first got to know Mr. Oshii, he invited me to come see him work on this sound remix thing for Pat Labor 1 and 2. Mr. Oshii was there alone that day, in this huge studio […] Akira Kurosawa made the rain black, actually. […] So what you do is, you add sound. […] They emphasized the sound of each raindrop. […] Mr. Oshii remixed it very precisely and I do that with my games too.”
