HIDEO KOJIMA presents Brain Structure #18 — Hideo Kojima x Nicolas Winding Refn

“I think that creating things is a means to say goodbye to your past self, so I think what you're saying is exactly right.”

“I gave him a nickname. I call him Refn-chan. I have the best relationship with Refn-chan.”

“So yeah, after going independent, I had nothing. All I had were connections with people, so I followed those connections to make the game.”

“Well, I'm not an actor, so I'm just kind of there for presents. […] I've played the role of an assassin before too.”

“The only thing Nicolas and I can do for the world is create things. We aren't capable of doing anything else, so we'll probably keep making things until we die.”

“And it's said that the weight of the soul is 21 grams. […] When I thought about this character, I instantly thought of Nicolas.”

“It was my first time meeting Nicolas, and yet, from that moment on, after just 20 or 30 minutes of talking, I felt like he was a childhood friend, someone I had known from ages ago.”

“I don't really tell people this, but about three years ago, I was ill for a little while. And during that time, Nicolas constantly sent me messages of encouragement.”
