“We do it once like an air hug, where you hug from a distance. And then we do it again without the helmet.”
Kojima described motion‑capture shooting tricks for Death Stranding 2 while they were still filming and said they would continue shooting for some time: actors wear a super‑tight suit like a wetsuit with marker‑dots that provide the data; they use a heavy helmet with a bar and two cameras in front of the face plus a microphone, the same system as Avatar though not easy to use; a small recording light blinks in front of the eyes and Kojima noted that only Shioli thinks you get used to it while Norman says it is too bright; hug scenes, where the helmet bars can collide, are filmed twice — once as an “air hug” at distance and then again without the helmet; and the velcro on the suits causes actors to stick together and its sound gets recorded, which is not acceptable.
“she has to wear that super tight suit. It's like a wetsuit. […] It's the same system as Avatar too, but it's not easy. The helmet is pretty heavy. […] You're the only one who thinks that, Shioli. Norman always says that it's bright. […] But the velcro on the suits get in the way and cause people to get stuck together. And the velcro sound gets recorded and that's not good. […] Yes, we're still in the middle of it. We'll continue shooting for some time.”
