Anecdote 2023-01
“You can also see the background and where the enemy is located. It doesn't exist in the studio, but it appears on the screen.”
What it documents

The performance-capture stage for Death Stranding 2 uses a live screen: it is a simplified version but Shioli can see what she looks like in CG, appearing as the game character in that character’s outfit, and the background and where the enemy is located appear on the screen even though they do not exist in the studio; these visuals are consulted on the fly. Everyone plays around with that at the start and does not stop playing. The set functions like a green-screen stage in that there is nothing there, although props the actor must touch are set up, such as chairs and similar items. Sound is fed through an earpiece because voice and motion are recorded simultaneously so nothing can be played over loudspeakers; rain or gunfire can be played back to nail the timing, and the crew recently shot a scene while playing a song they think they will use in that particular scene.

“It's a simple process version, but Shioli can see what she looks like in CG. She appears as a character from the game, wearing that character's outfit. […] We use earpieces to play back the sound. Since we're recording both the movements and the voices, we can't play other noises over the loudspeaker. But anyways, we can play back the sound of rain or gunfire, especially if we want to get the timing just right. The other day we shot a scene while playing a song that I think we're going to use that in a particular scene. […] Everyone plays around with that at the start.”
