“With Policenauts, I made almost everything on my own. So it's really my blood, sweat and tears.”
Thirty years on, Kojima judged Policenauts a commercial failure but said the game is very personal to him: he did almost everything himself, so it is literally his blood, sweat and tears, having handled everything except the specialized programming and the art, and even putting in the sound and the flags; it brings back memories. The title was released for 3DO, PlayStation and Sega Saturn, and he said the PlayStation version can currently be played, he believes. He also noted they never released an international version, but users have added subtitles and the game has become known overseas, so he thinks everyone knows Kikuko’s voice — a remark made with a nod to streamers who now show it live.
“It was a flop though. […] I did everything besides the specialized programming and art. I worked on putting the sound in and flags too. […] We later had a 3DO, PlayStation, and the Sega Saturn version. […] We never released an international version of the game, but users have added subtitles to it and it's become well-known overseas too. So I think everyone knows your voice, Kikuko.”
