In the case of a movie, in the end it's a different character…

Direct quote 2014-06-12
“In the case of a movie, in the end it's a different character separate from you executing all these actions. But in the game, it depends on you. It depends on your will to execute, to do something, to be violent or not.”
What it documents

Kojima explained that in a movie a character distinct from the viewer carries out all the actions, while in a game it depends on the player — on the player’s will to act, to do something, to be violent or not. He said that for that reason he can portray that violence and have the player experience what it truly entails, and that it is a somewhat contradictory approach, but he wants people to understand the side effects, the effects of violence by going through the battles in the games.
