“Regardless, it should be up to the individual to decide whether something is good news or bad news. The internet can control that though.”
Kojima explained why he does not respond to rumors: if he says something it becomes news, and if he denies something people will take that denial and manipulate it, so it is an endless cat‑and‑mouse game and he currently chooses not to tweet anything about it. He criticised the trend of headlines that already come labeled: if tomorrow a headline reads “Kojima had drinks last night” they will mark it as good news or bad news, when the natural thing would be to read the tweet and let each individual make up their own mind. If the headline is “Kojima had dinner with someone from Sony,” the “bad news” label reveals Microsoft’s perspective and the “good news” label reveals PlayStation’s. He said it should be up to the individual to decide whether something is good or bad news, but the internet can control that; it is fairly scary and something he must be careful about, which is why he chooses not to say too much.
